New Devonshire Red chicken sausage launched in time for Christmas
For the first time Lloyd Maunder butchers shops will be selling chicken sausages as part of their famously extensive sausage range.
The new sausage has been made using corn fed Devonshire Red chicken meat, naturally seasoned with sage, thyme, ginger and nutmeg to give it a warm and distinctive flavour.
As well as operating a chain of 15 butchers shops in Devon and Cornwall, Lloyd Maunder is also the region's leading poultry producer. The Devonshire Red is its breed of slow growing chicken reared locally only in higher welfare systems.
“Everyone who's tasted the chicken sausages loves them,” says David Carter, Lloyd Maunder shops manager. “We cooked some up as an experiment at the Devon County Show in May and they were such a hit we've now put them into production. As well as being fantastically tasty they're also lower in fat than pork sausages. We're expecting them to be quite a hit with Christmas coming up.”
Lloyd Maunder shops are renowned for their extensive sausage range, with each retailing up to 18 types of sausage at any one time. All are hand-made at the company's plant in Willand near Cullompton using fresh, local ingredients.
Devonshire Red corn fed chicken are reared indoors on family-run farms in the West Country to the RSPCA's Freedom Food standards, which ensures high welfare with more space and stimulation. They are fed a natural diet including corn, which gives the meat a deliciously distinctive flavor.
The new Devonshire Red chicken sausages are being retailed exclusively through Lloyd Maunder butchers shops in the run up to Christmas.
