One of our low-lying fields was half marsh and half well-drained land - it's called, for obvious reasons, Rushy Mead. Modern farming would dictate that the marshy area should be drained to create a completely dry field fit for cultivation. Not here - we kept the marsh and this month dug a pond in the dry bit. We're hoping that in time this will become a haven for wildlife, and are looking forward to seeing how the habitats develop over the coming seasons.
