By 22nd September our swallows had brood number three well on the way. It's a common sight to see swallows swoop and wheel over the farm in the evening, in their never ending hunt for insects. But we've just had a mixed flock of swallow, house martin and sand martin fly over with certain determination, which means the migration has started. Some of our swallows joined them. Judging from the forlorn look of our new brood, their parents were among them. I wish them luck for their incredible journey to Africa.
As it's autumn and the breeding season is over, we've had a bit of a tidy up to try to provide as many different habitats as possible for next Spring. On 21st October James came up to me and said, “Go an have a look at the pond Dad”. A new visitor. I hastily ran for my camera, shouting “Don't frighten it away”. I need not have worried. The cygnet was more interested in the food James put out for his ducks than any of our activities.
