These birds are reared indoors to the Freedom Food standard, which is defined and audited by the RSPCA.
The Freedom Food system permits only slow growing breeds such as the Devonshire Red to be reared, as these are less susceptible to leg and other health problems. The birds also enjoy more space and stimulation, with perches, straw bales and toys, even footballs, provided for them.
In addition, these particular Devonshire Reds are fed a special corn-based diet produced in Lloyd Maunder's dedicated feed mill, which gives the end product a lovely golden colour, superb flavour and succulent texture. This feed is GM-free and contains no growth promoters or hormones.
As Devonshire Red corn fed chicken is only marginally more expensive then standard chicken, it doesn't cost a lot for shoppers to 'trade up' to this welfare friendly option. In return you get taste, texture and peace of mind.
Freedom Food is the only UK farm assurance scheme dedicated to improving farm animal welfare. For more information about the scheme Click here
