Devonshire Red free range chicken
As the name suggests, Devonshire Red free range chicken are free to roam outdoors in large, grassy paddocks.
Trees and shrubs are planted specially to provide natural shade which encourages the birds to range, forage and scratch around. At night they return to their barns where they are safe from predators.
With their naturally inquisitive nature, Devonshire Red chicken are known for making the most of their free range areas and they also make the most of their indoor environment, which is enriched with straw bales, perching and bright objects.
Our Devonshire Red Free Range Corn Fed chicken are also reared outdoors but with the addition of a special corn-based diet, which gives the end product a lovely golden colour, superb flavour and succulent texture.
Lloyd Maunder was the first to pioneer free range chicken production for the retail market in 1996, and introduced the slow growing Devonshire Red breed to this system in 2003. Today all our free range chicken are reared in a way that adheres to RSPCA standards on Freedom Food approved farms.
Feed for all our free range chicken is produced in our dedicated feed mill and is GM-free with no growth promoters or hormones.
Each of the West Country farms that produce Devonshire Red free range chicken has a biodiversity action plan set by FWAG – the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group – to protect and encourage wildlife on the farm.
